Equipment

  • mini muffin tin
  • Oven
  • Large Bowl
  • saucepan
  • steovetop
  • mandolin
  • plate

Ingredients

  • 16-20 Mini Pie Crusts
  • 6 Thinly Sliced Gala Red Apple Technically you can use any type of apple, however, the sweeter an apple is, the less sugar you will need in your filling! Everyone, though, has their own preferences.
  • 1/2 cup of lime or lemon juice It is always best to find this lime or lemon juice fresh however, bottled works as well with no added sugars.
  • 4 tablespoons of unslated butter
  • 6 tablespoons of strawberry jam
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Your first step is to prepare the apples. First, peel the apples. Afterwards, clean the apples with warm water. For this apple pie bites recipe, it is important to cut the apples so they are moon-shaped. You can do this by using a sharp knife and a good eye, or by using a mandolin if you have one.
  • As you are preparing the apples and keeping them cool and preserved, you will need to line the muffin/cupcake tin with the frozen pie crusts. Don't let the pie crusts defrost. Instead, warm and pre-bake the pie crusts in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. This will keep the bottom from becoming soggy.
  • For the third step in this Rose Apple Pie Bites recipe is to make the filling. Mix the rest of the ingredients listed above in a smaller bowl or mug. The recipe only yields a small amount because not a lot of filling is needed for each rose. Too much can cause the filling to spill as it bakes.
  • Afterwards, on a clean plate, line up 8-10 moon-shaped apple slices. They should be thin and have a small amount of filling. Roll carefully inward these apple slices. In no time, you will start to notice the shape and design of a rose with the top layer showing a dark red peel color.
  • Once you have your rolled up apple rose, you can continue making this rose apple pie bites recipe by placing the delicious apple pie rose inside of the muffin tin and pie crust. Add more filling between the petals. Bake at 375 Degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.  Keep checking though as sometimes 30 minutes is too long.

Notes

  • There are many ways to make rose apple pie bites easily! Personally, I like to first warm up the apple slices before rolling them into the rose petal shapes and baking them. Do this by placing them in the microwave for about 10-25 seconds. This helps with the flexibility of the petals. Handle carefully though as the thin slices get very hot!
  • Also, while this recipe does call for using frozen mini pie crusts, you can still use other crusts and pie doughs! For instance, buying pre-made dough is an option, but you do have to bake them ahead of time and by using a mini muffin or cupcake tin.
