Equipment

  • 2 large clean bowls
  • a baking sheet or aluminum foil pan
  • spreading knife
  • Whisk
  • powder sprinkler
  • large parchment paper
  • kitchen scissors

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of cold or room temperature coffee
  • 8 oz of cool mascarpone cream cheese
  • 1 cup or 8 oz of heavy whipping cream
  • 6-8 sheets of thin matzah bread
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for garnish
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  • The first step is to prepare the pan. I recommend spraying the pan with a non-stick spray before adding the ingredients. Use one that is flavorless so that the flavor of the coffee does not change. Pour the measured coffee or espresso into the bottom of the pan.
  • During the second step in this matzah tiramisu recipe is to prepare the sweet filling. The cream inside of the tiramisu dessert uses basic ingredients like mascarpone cream and heavy whipping cream. To me, these ingredients are sweet enough. Whisk them together so that the filling is smooth.
  • In this step, you can also add sprinkles of cocoa powder and brown sugar. Make sure to leave a small amount of both ingredients to add as a topping in the fourth step.
  • Once the sweet filling is complete, you can move on to the third step this matzah tiramisu recipe.  Soak the matzah bread into the coffee that is sitting at the bottom of the pan. Make sure that the coffee is not fully covering the bread. With a spoon or spatula, spread the filling after the matzah bread.
  • Then, add another layer of matzah bread, pressing down gently. Repeat this step until you reach the top of the pan. You can go over, but it is good to make sure that the lid fits correctly.
  • After the third step, you can cover and chill before serving. You can enjoy this delicious dessert warm and at room temperature, but the taste does change. Use aluminum foil, a plastic lid, or plastic wrap to cover the tiramisu. Chill in the refrigerator for about 3 hours before serving.
  • Technically this fifth step is to store this matzah tiramisu recipe after the dessert is complete. Thankfully, there are many preservation techniques so you can continue to enjoy the delicious sweet and creamy dessert. First, add a lid or a plastic wrap cover so that no air is let into the tiramisu.
  • Afterward, place the dessert into the refrigerator for up to four days. Since it is a heavy cream and dairy recipe, it does spoil quickly. In the freezer, you can protect a matzah tiramisu for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • There are not a lot of tips or tricks to provide you for making our matzah tiramisu recipe.  First, the recipe only takes five steps, however, to complete. I recommend pre-baking the matzah bread with a coffee solution or shots of espresso. This will increase the intensity of the coffee flavor for your dish.
  • In the cream, you can also add coffee flavors and liquor. Layering the filling is easier if you add the filling and spread it to the bottom of the matzah bread. Brown sugar is a great topping, especially if sprinkled on top. You can add colors if you want a pop of color to the delicious matzah tiramisu dish.
