Bakers Square French Apple Pie Recipe - 1

Ingredients

For the pie crust:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

For the filling:

  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 egg white, beaten

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, butter, and salt. Use a fork to break the butter, or a pastry blender if available, until it looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the egg yolk. Add as much cold water as needed to make a soft dough that just holds together. Flatten dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  • Once chilled, roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Fold overhang under itself to form a 1/2-inch lip all around the edge of the pie plate. Crimp edge decoratively.
  • Bake the pie crust for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F, and then reduce the temperature to 300 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, toss apple slices with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger until well mixed. Spoon mixture into baked pie shell, mounding slightly on top.
  • Bake at 300 degrees F for about 45 minutes, or until apples are tender. Cool before serving.
