The first owner of the recipe was a young woman named Betty Crocker who sold the recipe in her cookbook.  The second owner of the recipe was Mrs. Pauline Pfeiffer.  The third owner of the recipe was Miss Martha White. The recipe has been sold many times since then. And today you can easily and proudly make this recipe at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between French apple pie and Dutch apple pie?

The French apple pie is made with apples and sugar, the Dutch apple pie is made with apples, sugar, cinnamon and raisins. The French pie has its origin in the Middle Ages, while the Dutch apple pie is more recent.

How do you make apple pie filling not runny?

You can make the filling without egg yolk and use cornstarch instead of flour to thicken the filling. You can also add a little lemon juice or vinegar to prevent the filling from running.

What apples are best for apple pie?

Choose firm apples that are not too sweet, like Granny Smith or Jonagold. They will keep their shape when cooked, so they won't disintegrate. If you want your apple pie to be golden brown on top, choose apples that are less sweet, like Braeburn or Gala.

Can you use Golden Delicious apples for apple pie?

Yes, but the texture of Golden Delicious apples is softer than other varieties. You may want to cut back on the sugar if you use them in your apple pie.  How do you slice an apple? Cut each apple in half horizontally, then cut each half into four wedges. To slice the wedges, hold one of the apple halves on its side and make a vertical cut through the core, stopping just short of the seeds. Next, make another cut at an angle toward the center of the apple, about 1/8-inch deep. Make three or four cuts in this direction, then turn the apple over and repeat the process.
